Ethnomedia LLC is proud to present "The Redemption" a play in one act by Sudipta Bhawmik at The New York International Fringe Festival - FringeNYC during August 12th to 28th, 2005. This play is about an Indian immigrant named Subimal who had to flee his own country and come to America in search of a new life and to hide from his past. Although Subimal did find a new life for himself, his past always haunted him, a past marred with violence, betrayal, death, guilt, and a failed attempt at a Communist revolution inspired by Mao Tse-Dong. He had always tried to keep his past hidden from his family when suddenly, one day the secret starts to reveal itself to his son Somu from a long lost diary. Somu, a Harvard junior, is extremely curious to know the details of his father's past, wants to know more about the Maoist revolution of India, but he never could have guessedthe kind of murky and deep waters he is getting into. Subimal tries to prevent the inevitable, but his failure to do so ultimately leads him to his redemption. The play is written and directed by Sudipta Bhawmik, a well-known actor, director and playwright of the New Jersey Bengali Theater. Besides performing and directing in several plays, Sudipta has also acted in internationally acclaimed director Mira Nair's upcoming film "The Namesake".
